Do Orc Lives Matter?

Image
I have been meaning to write this while The Rings of Power Season 2 was still on air, but I guess there is no better time than now. So, many of us LOTR fans heard TROP will show an orc family. It miffed a good part of the fanbase, begging someone to take a deeper dive into Tolkien lore on matters of orc kinship. " For the Orcs had life and multiplied after the manner of the Children of Ilúvatar... " - The Silmarillion, Of The Coming Of The Elves. Tolkien had gaps in his lores. Not much is known about orc-wives or orc-children. Or the manner of their reproduction. Tolkien came up with a reason that explained why these things are not mentioned in the books: " There must have been orc-women. But in stories that seldom if ever see the Orcs except as soldiers of armies in the service of the evil lords we naturally would not learn much about their lives. Not much was known. " - Tolkien, 1963, letter to Mrs. Munby. But, there are mentions of orcs mating in Orcs VIII, Morgo...

In memoriam, Richard Donner

Image
D irectors will tell you that working with hotshot actors maybe tough but working with kids is the toughest. When Harvey Stephens was cast as Damien in "The Omen" (1976), he was only 5 years old. Because Stephens was so young, director Richard Donner found that the best way to direct him was to provoke genuine reactions before the camera. For example, when Damien is angry at being taken to church, Donner got his peeved facial expression by shouting to Stephens off camera, "What are you looking at, you little bugger? I'll clobber you." In the closing scene, Donner used reverse psychology on Stephens, telling him, "Don't you dare laugh. If you laugh, I won't be your friend." Naturally, Stephens wanted to laugh, and he instead smiled directly into the camera. Donner used similar tactics in The Goonies (1985) as well. The whole cast claims that director Richard Donner had one key direction for the kids in any scene where something dramatic took pla...

God of War (2018) - An epic, healing experience

Image
The thing that came to my mind when I finished God of War was, "I will miss them." They took me on a journey, from their snow laden home in the Wildwoods to the Lake of Nine, from the idyllic Alfenheim to the fiery Muspelheim, from the dreaded Helheim to the cursed Niflheim, from Thamur's Corpse to The Mountain, fighting Draugrs, Trolls, Werewolves, Dark Elves, Valkyries, Gods and other creatures along the way. In short, one can say that the journey was epic and it will still fall short of description. The main theme that the game revolves around is 'family'. Although on introspect, it is more about the broken bonds between kins - the brothers Brok and Sindri, Freya and her son Baldur, Odin and his son Tyr, Thamur and his son Hrimthur, the reaver and his son and his father before him. Mainly it is the conflict between a father and his son, the relationship between Kratos and Atreus being the centrepiece of this story. At the beginning of the story, we find an olde...

Hope Burns Bright

Image
With a resounding thud, he hit the ground, unsettled dust encircling him. A pit formed where he fell. Stars , he thought, as he looked up at the sky. It was dark, but he didn't realize it was night until he regained consciousness. Curled up in a fetal position his thoughts drifted off into his childhood when he used to look up at skies like these. Billions of stars flickering billions of light years away. It reminded him of home. Home , he thought, turning on his back. Where was he? By now, the dust had settled and critters were coming out of their hiding, curious at the cause of their disturbance. He looked at his body. He wasn't hurt but his head wrung; like static sounds reverberating in his brain. He looked at the ring on his finger. It looked like a prop or something a kid would buy from a gift shop. Ring , he thought, while climbing out of the pit. By now, the critters have surrounded him, their numbers swelling by the minute. It was a desolated landscape, with ...

These Savage Shores Issue #1 Review

Image
Ram V and Sumit Kumar’s These Savage Shores issue #1 is a beautifully crafted fusion of European vampire lore and ancient Indian myth and culture. Since creation, order and chaos have been designated as opposing forces, one bringing peace while the other wreaking havoc. When the colonialists came upon foreign lands, they sowed seeds of chaos to create disharmony among the natives, effectively dividing them and making it easier to bring them under order. Hence, there always has been an inherent relationship between order and chaos. However, the imperialists preferred the terms civilized and uncivilized. They deemed the natives of these invaded lands as uncivilized making it easier for them to bound the inhabitants in chains under the pretext of bringing the light of civilization of these dark shores. These Savage Shores opens with the enigmatic Bishan and his lady love, Kori in a tryst among the lush and scenic greenery of the Malabar forest. As they talk about folk tales and civili...

8 Animes From Early 2000s that are really underrated

The early 2000s were a great time for anime. From the eponymous Naruto to the rise of Bleach, from cult classics like Monster and FLCL to the highly acclaimed Samurai Champloo, anime around this time made foregrounds around the world with its sleek animations and smart storytelling. However, there are a few that passed under the radar of the masses and this list puts together a few of them.   Get Backers (2002) Lost something? Contact the Get Backers, a highly successful recovery service run by two guys – Ban Mido and Ginji Amano. However, they are not just your run-of-the-mill protagonists. Ginji is able to generate thousands of volts of electricity from his body, while Ban has two abilities – a gripping strength of 200kg and the ability to hypnotize anyone who eye-contacts with him, called the Jagan. Despite of their high success rate, the duo is almost always broke and live out of their car, a Subaru 360. Get Backers is a hidden gem from Studio Deen, the same studio ...
